"This is my commandment, that you love one another." John 15:12, God is love. His very nature and perfection are love, not living for Himself but giving life and blessing to others. Through His love He offered His one and only Son so that He might give all to Him. In His love He created humanity so that He could be them the recipients of His blessedness.
"This is My commandment" -- His one, and only, all-inclusive commandment -- "that you love one another." Nothing could be more unnatural than for one who claims to follow Christ not loving others, without condition, even as He loves all others unconditionally. He asks this of us above everything else in this life: "By this all will know that you are my disciples, if you love for one another" John 13:35. The one and only means of following Christ is to give unquestionable obedience to His one commandment.
If one truly believes in the depths of the heart He is the Son of God, one's relationship with all others must be, not should be, in the spirit of Christ's love. One's very life and behavior must demonstrate the sacrifice of love; giving oneself up to be consumed with the needs of others without reservation. Christ commands it. There are only two choices, there are no gray areas. If one is to truly follow Christ, this His one commandment must be obeyed, or one cannot abide in His love.
Christ is all love. He loves to give. He gives to love. If you surrender your all to Him, He will teach you to love, even as He loved us unto death. He expects no less of us, even unto the death.
