We who profess to follow Christ are meant to live a very simple life. There is no possible means to obtain a waiver, or dispensation, from this. The simplicity of our life is but one of the 'fruits of the Spirit" Christ described, with His life as a living example for us. The question we must ask ourselves is just how serious we are about this life of being a Christian? While we may hide the truth from our family, friends, neighbors, all others around us, we cannot hide the truth from God. He reads our hearts like an open book. If we are truthful with God, and ourselves, we will admit to the distractions of this life preventing us from living the simple life He has laid out for us. Jobs, family, friends, home, culture, community, husband, children, wife they are all there, ready tools with which we are easily distracted from living our lives as He would have us.
Stop and take notice of your life. Does it involve food and shelter, meals, employment, paying bills, keeping up with the neighbors, whose last name may, or may not, be Jones? Is your life one of simplicity or multiplicity? Do you take the teaching of Christ to heart? Or, do you just give it 'lip service' while remaining caught up in the trappings of this life at the expense of the future life?
When we come down to it, there is very little difference between the society of our day and age and the society of 2000 years ago. The only difference between then and now is found in technological advancements made by mankind. Christ's teachings remain the same yesterday, today and tomorrow.
