As we move forward with this project, we must remember care must be based on person-centered and person - directed values and care where the voice of the older individual is honored and respected. The core person - centered values include the following: choice, dignity, respect, self-determination, and purposefull living. If every person with whom we work embraces these core values as we interact with older individuals to whome we deliver care and services, then we will all be living our mission to "Make a difference -- every day, every time." The individual is of utmost importance. That the individual be treated with the dignity deserved is an imperative.
Residents must be empowered to have a choice and make decision in their daily care and preferred activities including such things as meal times and the foods they eat, times that they wake up and times that they go to bed, which care giver to assist them with their care, etc. Any center which follows the person - directed care plan ultimately has better quality of care which then leads to a better quality of life for residents.
